How We Install Your Outdoor Paver System

Step 1: Project Assessment

Your dedicated Construction Supervisor assesses your outdoor space. Based on your local environment and existing structures, we recommend one of 3 building solutions:

1. Concrete overlay system
2. Remove and replace
3. Start from scratch

A remove and replace approach is most common in Texas outdoor spaces.

Step 2: Preparation

For a standard remove and replace project, paver installation begins with the demolition of the existing surface. All existing hardscape — concrete, pavers, stone — is removed.

Your construction team excavates down another 4 to 6 inches to create an 8”-10” paver system. The area is built back up using a stabilized, compacted base material.

A small amount of bedding sand is applied to your concrete pavers for the perfect base. An edge restraint is poured around the outside of the space to keep your desired design intact.

Step 3: Personalized Considerations

A typical Allied Outdoor Solutions concrete pour has a 4” slab of concrete, ⅜” rebar on 18” centers. The on-site Supervisor takes extra care to note the slope of your yard or driveway, as well as any signs of clay soil expansion or erosion.

Every outdoor space is different, and your unique project site informs our approach to the build. We’ll consider thicker concrete at the approach, any underground or surface drains that need to be installed, and the layout of existing irrigation and sprinkler systems.

Step 4: Installation

The pavers are laid into place using an interlocking pattern. You’ll collaborate with your outdoor living designer prior to the project to decide on the pattern and style that works best with your existing home architecture.

Once the pavers are laid, polymeric sand is used to fill the joints. Polymeric sand looks like grout, but is far superior — it inhibits weed growth, prevents sand loss and protects against long-term joint erosion.

We don’t actually recommend a sealant — it will only begin a new maintenance cycle to worry about. We’re happy to clean and seal them down the road if you change your mind.

Is cracking an issue with concrete pavers?

Not typically. Pavers are small, highly dense units that naturally resist the long cracks found in ordinary concrete due to their construction.

Are pavers stronger than concrete?

Inch-for-inch, pavers are stronger than standard concrete. This is due to their highly dense, compressed fabrication.

Do pavers stain easily on a driveway or pool deck?

All cement and concrete products change color slightly over time due to weathering and outside forces. However, pavers are less likely to stain than larger concrete slabs and products.

Pavers are rated for less than 5% absorption. This is far lower than asphalt and standard concrete. This aids in their resistance against oil, salt and chlorine absorption.
